Alila Manggis and Alila Ubud receive ASEAN Green Hotel Award

I’m delighted to share that once again, Alila Manggis and Alila Ubud in Bali have been recognized for their commitment to responsible tourism, each receiving the coveted ASEAN Green Hotel Award recently. This award honours the environmental efforts of hotels from the ten ASEAN member countries, namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The award is one of six ASEAN Tourism Standards considered essential for supporting ASEAN to become a world-class quality destination. It is presented to hotels that meet 11 environmental and energy conservation criteria. Among the criteria are environmental policies and actions for hotel operation, use of green and local products, collaboration with the local community on environmental protection, staff training on environmental management, as well as efficient management of water, energy, waste, air quality and noise pollution.

Green Globe affiliated since 2006, Alila Manggis and Alila Ubud have achieved best practice results in a number of these areas. Similarly, our Alila Villas properties in Bali and Maldives have achieved the Green Globe design and build accreditation, demonstrating a commitment to the highest environmental standards.

As with all our hotels and resorts, Alila Manggis and Alila Ubud fully embrace Alila’s philosophy that commerce, conservation and community can and should be integrated. Besides minimizing their environmental impact, they demonstrate a deep respect for local cultures and a commitment to benefiting local economies.

To further the economic development of local communities and help them maintain their traditions, the hotels actively engage the community in their Alila guest experiences. For instance, guests can gain an appreciation for the Balinese culture through dance classes, village performances, or meeting with a local healer. Opportunities to support the community are also presented through charity art events, and guest packages that incorporate pledged donations. The appointment of an Environmental Consultant further enables the hotels to understand and minimize any negative environmental and societal impacts.

The ASEAN Green Hotel Award is the latest in a string of accolades for their green practices. In 2007, Alila Manggis won Gold in Bali’s prestigious Tri Hita Karana Tourism Awards, while Alila Ubud received Emerald, the award’s highest distinction. This award recognizes the effort to maintain a balanced relationship between man and God, man and fellow man, and between man and the environment.

In the same year, the hotels were named among the top ten eco-friendly hotels in Asia by independent online travel company, Agoda. They have also earned the Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Award for their ongoing commitment to environmental best practices.
