Kelley Cheng is a Jill-of-all-trade – the Editor-in-Chief of Singapore Architect magazine, she also runs her own publishing & design consultancy The Press Room, and on top of it, she owns 2 trend-setting F&B outlets 15 minutes and Night & Day, and an art gallery under the Night & Day label.

3-time SOPA (Society of Publishers Asia) Award winning Editor and Creative Director Kelley Cheng has carved a name in the specialised area of book making and magazine creating. With 12 years of experience in the publishing industry, Kelley started her own publishing firm at 27 and founded the multiple award-winning design magazine ish, which successfully ran for a decade until 2009. Graduated as an honours student from the School of Architecture, NUS, she was recently appointed as the Editor-in-Chief for the 40-year old architectural journal, Singapore Architect, with the task to revamp the entire publication into a commercially viable magazine with international appeal. Having served eight years as the Editorial Director of the reputed art & design publisher Page One Publishing, she was the creative brains behind hundreds of Page One books published worldwide. Many of the books created by her had been co-published by reputed foreign publishers such as Rockport, Harper Collins, Loft, etc. Some of her best selling books have been published up to 13 languages worldwide with printruns of 100,000 and still going.

2009 sees the birth of her new venture – a publishing and design consultancy The Press Room, which dabbles in all areas of design from publishing, graphic, brand, environmental, interior to theatre lighting and set design.

In support of local talent, Kelley set up Night & Day, as well as 15 Minutes – two F&B/gallery joints. She also sits on the advisory panels for educational and design institutions (Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Design, LaSalle Degree Validation Panel, Singapore Furniture Industry Council Design Development Committee, etc). She has been a curator for various art exhibitions, sat on numerous judging panels for local and international design competitions (Red Dot Awards, Nagoya-Do!, Design for Asia, Creative Circle awards, etc)

Most recently, Kelley was celebrated as one of 2009 Great Women of Our Time in the Art & Design category – an annual event held by Singapore Women’s Weekly with the support of various Singapore Ministries & Ministers.

CSI-Ninja Butlers at Alila Villas Uluwatu

It is not easy to top Singapore Airlines’ business class service but the good people at Alila Villas Uluwatu did just that. At Alila Villas Uluwatu, the personal butlers really mean business, at least my wonderful personal butler Armawa surely did. Armawa – a young friendly local boy – has obviously been trained to be a ninja-butler, or a CSI-butler, or maybe both. Whenever I needed him, he magically appeared and whatever I needed, it too magically appeared before I even asked for it. Like the architecture, every aspect of Alila Villas Uluwatu has been obsessively designed – to completely indulge you.
