Book your holiday now: Alila Villas Soori, Bali

by Felicia Sullivan, a guest at Alila Villas Soori and the author of The Sky Isn’t Visible from Here, which has been featured in Vanity Fair, Elle, USA Today, Redbook, Newsday, and The Washington Post.

Breathtaking, isn’t it? We often take the quiet, the simple and the stark for granted. In the midst of frenzy, we forget to sink deeper under the covers, savor the sunsets, and settle calmly amongst the quiet. It’s easy to get lost in the thicket, I suppose. When I left New York last week I was anxiety-ridden, hunched over, and angry for reasons I couldn’t understand. Six days later, I leave Bali rested and filled with clarity. Perhaps I needed another coat of arms for all the warfare. Possibly I underestimated how much protection I’d need.

A few months ago I discovered Alilas Villas Soori on a whim. It was the middle of the day, and I was prattling on in my office about how a woman needed a vacation, a woman was suffering, etc. I was ready to hatchet the lot when I clicked onto Gilt’s Jetsetter, and fell deeply and rapturously in love with the thought of seclusion, of undisturbed ocean and waves of solitude. I didn’t seek out the fanfare and confetti of popular tourist traps; I didn’t want to be near cackling voices and fork tines scraping plates. What I loved so much about Alilas was the fact that it was remote, tucked away, a tiny postage stamp of idyll centered in one of the most magical places in the world.

And maybe the idea of staying in a villa with a private pool wasn’t too shabby, as well.

To say my visit was anything short of extraordinary would be an understatement. From the ocean-front, private villa replete with sustainable furniture, a sunken jacuzzi, outdoor shower, his + her vanities, and an Apple TV filled with new releases and dependable favorites, to a daily delivery of fresh, local fruit, to a warm, hospitable villa host available 24/7, ready to indulge my every fancy, to a spa that hosts top-notch French facials and Thai massages, to an outdoor terrace that sports an infinity pool, a cabana area for lounging or dining al fresco surrounded by lush greenery and flora, I have never had a luxurious experience of this magnitude. And believe me, a woman has traveled.

A woman has never borne witness to such exquisite sunsets.

Perhaps you’ve read my ode to Alilas Villas Soori’s delectable delights or followed me along as my private guide took me on extensive journeys to experience Bali culture, art, food, lifestyle, and scenery? I’m indebted to the Villas, for they’ve made every moment of my stay memorable.

And the cost? Not as steep as you would imagine. Although I scored a $285/night rate on Jetsetter for a private villa, the costs don’t soar too far north (unless you’re securing a 3-bedroom villa situation, then you can’t be helped), and quite honestly, are worth it.

So if you’re ready to flee the country, I can’t recommend Alila Villas Soori ENOUGH. And if you’re travels should take you elsewhere in Asia, check out the Alila Hotels chain.

And check out my departure gift from the staff — a hand-crafted sandalwood fan! Also, my final breakfast in Bali, SIGH!!!
