Book your holiday now: Alila Villas Soori, Bali
Breathtaking, isn’t it? We often take the quiet, the simple and the stark for granted. In the midst of frenzy, we forget to sink deeper under the covers, savor the sunsets, and settle calmly amongst the quiet. It’s easy to get lost in the thicket, I suppose. When I left New York last week I was anxiety-ridden, hunched over, and angry for reasons I couldn’t understand. Six days later, I leave Bali rested and filled with clarity. Perhaps I needed another coat of arms for all the warfare. Possibly I underestimated how much protection I’d need.

Love at Second Sighting
When I arrived at the Alila Villas Soori in November, I noticed a number of improvements compared with my first visit about six months earlier. The drive from the airport seemed shorter (just under an hour) due to what felt like a better, smoother road and for some reason, the pool seemed bigger. I don’t have an explanation for the latter observation but for the first one the reason was obvious: On this visit I came with my girlfriend.
Silence at Alila Villas Soori
When I booked my stay at Alila Villas Soori, I was looking for a quiet retreat so I could study in peace. Little did I know, I’d be getting exactly what I wanted. My university’s reading week, where I’m studying psychology part-time, coincidentally coincides with Nyepi, Bali’s day of silence to mark their new year (this year, it landed on March 5th).
Spa Days and Starry Nights: My Week at Alila Villas Soori
Contrary to budding urban myths, Alila Villas Soori sits a surprisingly convenient striking distance from the action in Seminyak or even Ubud. As we drove into the verdant countryside, I could feel my breathing slow down, as if the drive provides an intended transition from urban stress to beachfront bliss. At the end of the hour’s journey I felt ready to embrace the smiling crowd of staff gathered to welcome me outside the sleek open air lobby. I even managed to remember a few names.
Olive Ridley Turtle hatchings discovered in Kelating Beach, Bali
Light plays an important part in our lives. In the natural world, the soft twinkle of starlight and the warmth of moonbeams guide much of the behavior of wildlife. Sea turtles live most of their lives out in the open sea and converge within 15kms around nesting sites for about two months during nesting periods.
