Under the Skin at Alila Manggis
Like its namesake fruit, the mangosteen, Manggis on the east coast of Bali isn’t quite as accessible as better-known Bali destinations. However, it rewards you with a memorable taste of the ‘Island of the Gods’ that is well worth the extra effort.
About a two-and-a-half hour drive from the airport delivers you to the [...]
Delicious indulgence in Bali for our maximooners
Kath Freer and her husband James have been exploring the Far East, with an unscheduled interlude in Bali the latest stop on their year-long honeymoon. It makes a change for us to read about our adrenaline-junkie maximooners chilling out on the beach, downing mega-cocktails and devouring prawns the size of a hand – nice!

Bali rides the crest of a Julia Roberts wave
From Travel Mail, Mail on Sunday UK on 25 September 2011
Tourist board executives on Bali are convinced that the recent big rise in tourism can be contributed to Julia Roberts. Her starring role in the last year’s Hollywood success Eat, Pray, Love, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, is thought to have pushed the Indonesian island [...]
LUXURY RESORTS: Alila Villas Uluwatu
There is something magical about Made. That’s the only explanation. How else does he know I’m going to need a coffee before I’ve even thought it, or that today I’d like to listen to Mozart when yesterday it was Lady Gaga? Or that a visit to a temple is bound to suit my mood tomorrow? [...]
Not 5 or 6 star, it’s Superstar!
In this age, 5-star hotels are already a passé. Not even 6-star. The competition to be the best is really about creating a superstar experience. So, as far as superstar experience is concerned – if you have a weekend to spend, some money to splurge, a lover to indulge – Alila Villas Soori is the place. For those who can’t afford a 40-million vacation home, nor renting a whole private resort island, perhaps Alila Villas Soori serves well as a small taste of exquisite exclusivity.
Book your holiday now: Alila Villas Soori, Bali
Breathtaking, isn’t it? We often take the quiet, the simple and the stark for granted. In the midst of frenzy, we forget to sink deeper under the covers, savor the sunsets, and settle calmly amongst the quiet. It’s easy to get lost in the thicket, I suppose. When I left New York last week I was anxiety-ridden, hunched over, and angry for reasons I couldn’t understand. Six days later, I leave Bali rested and filled with clarity. Perhaps I needed another coat of arms for all the warfare. Possibly I underestimated how much protection I’d need.

Love at Second Sighting
When I arrived at the Alila Villas Soori in November, I noticed a number of improvements compared with my first visit about six months earlier. The drive from the airport seemed shorter (just under an hour) due to what felt like a better, smoother road and for some reason, the pool seemed bigger. I don’t have an explanation for the latter observation but for the first one the reason was obvious: On this visit I came with my girlfriend.
Silence at Alila Villas Soori
When I booked my stay at Alila Villas Soori, I was looking for a quiet retreat so I could study in peace. Little did I know, I’d be getting exactly what I wanted. My university’s reading week, where I’m studying psychology part-time, coincidentally coincides with Nyepi, Bali’s day of silence to mark their new year (this year, it landed on March 5th).
